12th Grade Media Arts
Flushing International High School
Inspired by artist Barbara Kruger, this project pairs text and image to explore how to communicate messages with art. Using point-and-shoot digital cameras and simple word processing, students create powerful artwork about education, democracy, discrimination, self-esteem, and other issues that effect their lives.
To begin, students created a series of related pieces to capture the viewers’ attention and generate thought about an issue. They then developed text that literally described the image or issue. After peer critique and observation of other students’ works-in-progress, they gradually distilled the text to create a powerful and simple message. The text was printed and glued onto the images using uniform colors typical of the Barbara Kruger.
