from Queensland: Consumption, Waste, Making Art
12th Grade Media/Visual Arts
In this unit inspired by Brazilian artist Vik Muniz, students explore issues of consumption + waste through the lens of contemporary art, learning about artists who use, examine and/or critique the subject in their work. Students examine for themselves what they consume and the waste they produce, discuss the impact on the environment and examine alternatives. Throughout, students create a series of photographic + mixed media artworks, exploring for themselves how to effectively use found/recycle/waste items as artistic material + subject matter. The unit culminates in a large “found-object painting” reflecting the borough of Queens, created with items students collect from their own lives.
